| Currently the phone company
arranges phone books by zip codes - which ties our phone listings to the
disarrayed state of the U. S. Post Office in our area. Perhaps when Black
Hawk gets it's new Post Office, and we finally get our own Zip Codes, the
phone situation will straighten out also.
In putting together a Gilpin County phone book, we started with only 582 numbers. However, some people who have a 582 prefix have moved out of the area but kept their number. Some who moved into the area were able to keep their old phone number. And there is a sprinkling of prefixes that overlap into Gilpin from the surrounding areas. Also there are a couple of different phone companies that can service the area. For all of the above reasons, the phone company can not supply us with an exclusive list of Gilpin residents. We strive to keep the directory as current and complete as possible, but currently it is an impossible task.
